Going Beyond the Pink’s Bust-a-Move for Breast Cancer Dance Party (BAM) 2026 is back, and it’s bigger, bolder, and more meaningful than ever. Help Us Spread the Word! Free Screening Mammograms For Uninsured in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties

Removing Barriers. Saving Lives.

Breast cancer affects hundreds of individuals across Southeastern North Carolina every year. Early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve outcomes but for many, the cost of screening and diagnostic services can be a major barrier.

The Going Beyond the Pink's new Coastal NC Mammogram Access Program helps bridge that gap by providing financial assistance for those who need breast health services but cannot afford them. Our goal is simple: No one should miss a potentially life-saving mammogram because of cost.

What Services Are Available?

Through the Coastal NC Mammogram Access Fund, eligible participants may receive financial assistance for:

• Screening Mammograms
• Baseline or annual breast cancer screening.
• Diagnostic Mammograms
• Additional imaging when symptoms or abnormalities are present.
• Biopsy Services, when recommended by a healthcare provider after diagnostic imaging.

Services require a physician referral and are provided through trusted imaging and medical providers in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties.

Why This Program Matters

Many individuals fall into a gap where they do not qualify for public programs but still cannot afford screening or diagnostic care. Without access to early detection, breast cancer may be diagnosed later when treatment is more difficult and outcomes are worse. By removing financial barriers, the Coastal NC Mammogram Access Program helps:

• Improve early detection of breast cancer
• Reduce healthcare disparities in our community
• Provide timely care for those who might otherwise go without screening
• Offer education and support throughout the breast health journey

And of course, participants also receive access to Going Beyond the Pink’s online breast health education resources, empowering women to stay informed and proactive about their health.

Thanks to Everyone Who Came Out for Breast Cancer Awareness Night with the Cape Fear Ghost Crabs!

What a wonderful evening at the ballpark! GBTP was honored to participate in the Cape Fear Ghost Crabs' Breast Cancer Awareness Night, where our breast cancer survivors were recognized in a truly special way. Survivors were invited onto the field for the ceremonial first pitch and had the opportunity to meet and shake hands with players from both the Cape Fear Ghost Crabs and the Mid-State Melon Mashers.

The night was filled with community spirit, celebration, and support as fans came together to honor the strength and resilience of those impacted by breast cancer. From the excitement of the game to the meaningful moments shared on the field, it was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

We are grateful to the Cape Fear Ghost Crabs for creating such a welcoming and uplifting event. If you haven't had a chance to attend a Ghost Crabs game yet, we highly encourage you to check one out. It's a fun, family-friendly experience and a great way to support local baseball while enjoying a fantastic night out in our community.

In the News - AI Is Changing Breast Cancer Screening. Here's What That Means for You

Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming one of the most exciting developments in breast cancer screening and new research published in the journal, Radiology suggests it could help radiologists find more cancers while reducing unnecessary callbacks for patients. But experts say it's important to balance excitement with realistic expectations.

Researchers studying the use of AI in mammography screening found that AI-assisted screening programs were able to detect more breast cancers while reducing false-positive results and lowering the workload for radiologists. In one large study from Denmark, cancer detection rates increased while false-positive findings decreased after AI was introduced into the screening process.

Why survivors should care

For many women, the stress of waiting for mammogram results or being called back for additional imaging that ultimately turns out to be benign is all too familiar. AI has the potential to help radiologists identify suspicious findings more accurately, which could mean earlier detection of some cancers and fewer unnecessary follow-up appointments.

Researchers have also found that AI can help radiologists focus their attention on areas of concern within mammograms, improving overall detection performance.

The reality check

While the results are promising, AI is not replacing radiologists anytime soon.

Most experts see AI as a tool that works alongside highly trained medical professionals not instead of them. Studies show the best outcomes often occur when AI and radiologists work together, combining technological efficiency with human expertise and clinical judgment.

Additionally, researchers continue to evaluate how AI performs across different populations, breast densities, imaging systems, and healthcare settings. More research is needed to ensure these tools work effectively and equitably for everyone.

Bottom line

AI is showing real promise in helping detect breast cancer earlier and making screening more efficient. That's exciting news for patients, survivors, and healthcare providers alike. But like many medical innovations, the technology is still evolving.

For now, experts recommend viewing these developments with cautious optimism: hopeful about the possibilities, while recognizing that continued research, testing, and oversight will be essential before AI reaches its full potential in breast cancer care.
